Christmas is closer than it feels. How a welding shop became Beamish Metal Works
We did not start as a décor company. In the spring of 2017 we were a small welding and fabrication shop. The specialty was aluminum. Then one day a little nut-and-bolt chopper got made, posted to social media, and the response was bigger than expected. That one piece pushed the shop into more nut-and-bolt artwork, then into replicas of pets, motorcycles, snowmobiles, and just about everything in between. A lot of the early lake- and heart-shaped pieces were cut by hand. After enough hours of cutting that the hands cramped, the obvious thought showed up: there has got to be a better way. So a CNC plasma metal cutting machine got designed and built in-house. A CNC router for wood followed. Today the shop runs a 5x10' CNC plasma table, a 4x8' CNC router, a 3x3' CNC router, and a CO2 laser. That mix is why we can cut steel cleanly, carve maple in 3D, and still keep the rustic wood-and-metal look that people come here for. You can read the full shop story on our About Us page. We are a Minnesota shop — North East side of Mille Lacs Lake, near Remer — and we still make and ship in the USA. The claim on the homepage is the same one we stand on every day: we are the craftsmen combining metal and wood this way. You will not find this exact work somewhere else.The mission has not changed much since those first nut-and-bolt sculptures. We want pieces that are fun and thoughtful. The cribbage boards are back — starting with the flag
Cribbage belongs at the cabin, at the kitchen table, and in the living room after Christmas dinner. It is one of those games that does not need a screen, does not get old, and gives people an excuse to sit still together. We used to make custom cribbage boards. We are making them again. The first board back in the lineup is the American Flag Cribbage Board. It is 3D carved from maple hardwood and made in the USA. Maple is a hard, tight-grained wood that takes carving well and holds up to real use — which matters, because this is not meant to live in a box. It is meant to get played.Why start with the flag? Because it does two jobs at once. It is a working game board, and it is patriotic art. It works in a lake home, a garage shop, a man cave, a farmhouse kitchen, or over a sideboard at Christmas.
